Copywriting & Creative

There’s nothing to writing.  All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein. ~ Walter Wellesley “Red” Smith

What Is It?

Creative Writing is just what it sounds like – the foundation of all compelling writing, whether getting someone to buy something, or to adopt an idea. It’s the difference between text that describes and text that ‘pops’. Why simply describe your business when you can compel your customers?

How do you use it? (The Application)

Content writing and creative copy have a number of practical applications in the marketing world:

  • It draws focus on search engines, websites, emails, and print copy
  • It compels someone to read more, buy something, or interact with the writer
  • It convinces someone that you are an intelligent, savvy leader
  • It structures arguments and educates people

Why it’s so important (The Result)

  • Increases click-through to websites from search engines, regardless of rankings
  • Increases direct responses to newsletters and emails
  • Builds trust by making you sound smart
  • Educates customers, which ask less questions before buying

The Conclusion: Creative copy directly leads to more clicks, more sales, more calls, more leads, and more money.

Example:

Let’s give an example: which compels you more to click?

1. SURFEX.COM — Welcome to Surf Express!
Load SURFEX.COM home page, The People of Surf Express, Click for IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFO, SurfEx shirts, hats, and more… Post your surf reports and pictures! . …

2. Surf Travel
Surf Travel with Wavehunters! Wavehunters is full-service surf travel agency, with airfares and custom packages to prime surfing areas around the world. …

#1 describes, #2 compels. You might have guessed that this copy is the result of a search engine search. Even though SURFEX.COM was in first place, which would you click on?

Pitfalls of creative writing

You can get too flowery, too obvious, trying to pound out the right message. Remember these very important things when writing creatively:

  • Know your audience (demographic)
  • Speak to your audience’s needs, not your strengths
  • Develop and refine your style to ‘one voice’
  • Don’t replace cold, functional facts with flowery writing
  • The most important thing: get the message across with brevity, balance, and b**ls.

Applicable products from Think Around Corners

  • Domain & Brand Selection: Let’s face it: some website names are bulky, off-topic and unfriendly – they don’t really deliver a quick overview of what you sell or service. The stickiness of a domain name is critical in enhancing return ease by memory alone. We’ll sit down with you for a 2-hour consultation and discover the perfect domain name for you. We’ll find you a domain name to be proud of!
  • Targeted Content Analysis: Does your website content bring in the right demographic? Are certain types of customers never reaching your website? We’ll discover them, inspire you to build content, and review your work.
